Cherokee IDPA - forecast - aerial map - IDPA.com - GADPA - GP.O - USPSA.org - more

January 19, 2010: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $135 at CB&T; give a $40 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet; and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $2606.

January 3, 2010: scores Twenty shooters compete on a cold, windswept afternoon. The club collects $135 from the 13 IDPA members, 2 CGC members (6 total), and 5 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to Ron L. for registering everyone; and to the shooters for helping with setup & teardown and leaving the range even better than found.

Lessons learned: Get extra batteries. The match used 2 stages from the 2009 Wheelgun Championship and 6 from December 2008 -- for consideration in the 2011 Championship. The iWheelgun site now has a forum for discussions.

Annual reminders:

  • no shooting before the match, please;
  • be sure to include your IDPA and/or CGC numbers on your scoresheet (and fill out the legalese on the back);
  • make checks payable to "Cherokee Gun Club -- IDPA";
  • please paste as many holes as you shoot and pick up as much brass, too;
  • "understand that this is a volunteer sport and volunteers do the work necessary for you to shoot matches and become classified; the more you offer to assist, the better the system works; be an active shooter by contributing your time and talents"; CGC members are Hosts, non-members are Guests, both are volunteers;
  • non-members may shoot after the match -- only if accompanied by a CGC member; (see me if you can't find one)
  • please remember that one of the responsibilities of IDPA membership is to shoot the Classifier at least once every 12 months;
  • there are usually enough shooters to sort the match results by classification; if we ever have enough shooters to sort the results by division as well, then we have more shooters than our match format can handle; so, if you enjoy these matches, don't tell anyone about them.

December 15, 2009: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $311 at CB&T; give a $90 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet; and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $2516.

Quarterly summary: The club collected an additional $268 in improvement fees. So the $2516 breaks down as $2202 earmarked for range improvements and $314 in working capital for the next wheelgun match (most likely Spring 2011).

December 6, 2009: scores Forty-five shooters compete on a chilly afternoon. The club collects $311 from the 29 IDPA members, 10 CGC members (20 total), and 6 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Chet, Howard, and Kenneth); to Ron L. for registering everyone; and to the shooters for leaving the range even better than found.

Car Wash; 3:32 PM EST

Lessons learned: The match used 6 stages from November last year and 2 additional stages to accommodate an overflow squad. But this still didn't eliminate squad-rotation bottlenecks, so next we will try cutting the squads off at 9. Beyond that, shooters go on an overflow list; when registration closes, I will divvy up the overflow list among the squads.

Classified shooters: Your info is online, and I can sign your classification card at a future match.

Through 2009, about 228 shooters have attended Cherokee IDPA matches. No one has been DQ'ed; only one has been banned (for ungentlemanly behavior at this month's match).

November 17, 2009: Financial routine: order targets and pasters, deposit the match proceeds of $312 at CB&T; give a $96 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet; and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $2293.

We will not be donating to the annual Cherokee Gun Club banquet because the Club is now handling that directly. Instead, I will buy tickets to the banquet for CGC members who have attended at least 5 Cherokee IDPA matches in the past 3 years; if interested, just let me know. (The IHMSA folks are purchasing mine, and I also thank them for the idea.)

Also, there is a new Ladies League to introduce women to the various shooting sports at CGC.

November 1, 2009: scores Forty-eight shooters compete on a partly sunny afternoon. The club collects $312 from the 33 IDPA members, 7 CGC members (16 total), and 8 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Bud, Chet, Howard, and John K.); to Ron D. for registering everyone; and to the shooters for leaving the range even better than found.

Lessons learned: Get more targets and pasters. The match used 2 stages from this year's Wheelgun Championship and 6 from October last year -- for consideration in the next Championship. Ron L. will again use Capel's scoring software for the Championship, as well as the Classifiers; however, the monthly matches seem to require a collaborative approach (along the lines of Google Docs, for example) for timely results and stage-design feedback -- which simply isn't anywhere out there. So I'm sticking with Perl to generate the monthly scores.

October 27, 2009: I add 13 of Myron's and Sammi's photos of the Wheelgun Championship to the iWheelgun site and make some changes to its appearance.

October 20, 2009: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $267 at CB&T; give an $82 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet; and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $2137.

October 4, 2009: scores Forty-one shooters compete on a cool afternoon. The club collects $267 from the 30 IDPA members, 5 CGC members (11 total), and 6 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Delbert and John); to Ron L. for registering everyone; and to the shooters for leaving the range even better than found.

Lessons learned: Two stages are thrown out because of a faulty timer, which was discovered by the last squad and by a comparison with the previous years' scores. Ron and I continue to evaluate scoring software, so please bear with us. Get more targets, pasters, and batteries.

September 23, 2009: Financial routine: pick up the CB&T deposit slip for the match proceeds of $286 and leave an $80 check for range fees in the CGC treasurer's mailbox along with the updated spreadsheet. Total club funds: $2036.

Quarterly summary: The club collected an additional $240 in improvement fees. So the $2036 breaks down as $1934 earmarked for range improvements and $102 in working capital for the next wheelgun match.

September 6, 2009: scores My thanks to Chet and Ron for running the Classifier match! Shooter info is also in the IDPA database, and I can sign your classification card at a future match. (Classifiers will now be available in March, June, and December; with a dedicated Classifier match in September.)

August 18, 2009: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $396 and $35 at CB&T; give a $104 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet; and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $1881.

August 2, 2009: scores Forty shooters compete on a humid, almost pleasant afternoon in the Third Annual Awesome August Anniversary Antagonism while another 12 shoot the Classifier for a record turnout of 52 shooters. The club collects $396 from the 40 IDPA members, 6 CGC members (13 total), and 6 new shooters; and $35 for a new membership. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Robert, Delbert, and Wanda as well as Chet and Howard); to Dan for registering everyone; and to the shooters for leaving the range even better than we found it.

Classified shooters: Your info is online, and I can sign your classification card at a future match. Special thanks to Marla for helping run the Classifier.

Lessons learned: Get more targets and pasters. This is still my favorite match design -- and with only one reload on the clock. A few people were turned away from the Classifier, so the next match will be a Classifier match (courtesy of Chet and Ron; IDPA membership required) in time for the state match.

July 21, 2009: Financial routine: renew club's IDPA membership, $60; deposit the match proceeds of $176 at CB&T; give a $56 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet (and his requested copies of 2008's spreadsheet and year-end bank statement for tax purposes); and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $1641.

July 5, 2009: scores Twenty-eight shooters compete on an overcast afternoon decorated with the occasional sprinkle. The club collects $176 from the 21 IDPA members, 3 CGC members (7 total), and 4 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Chet, Delbert, and Lynn); to Ron L. for registering everyone; and to the shooters for leaving the range even better than found.

Lessons learned: The match rounds out 3 years of stage design and refinement. In the past year, 18 stages were used in the Wheelgun Championship, 40 others were reviewed, and 12 were introduced -- for a total of 70 stages worth shooting more than once. (And Capel has broadcast some clarifications regarding magazine handling.)

June 5, 2009: I finish boxing the Wheelgun trophies and mail them ($51) and buy more staples. Financial routine: there won't be any other financial activity this month, so I update the spreadsheet now. Total club funds: $1576.

Quarterly summary: The club collected an additional $94 in improvement fees. So the $1576 breaks down as $1694 earmarked for range improvements and a $118 deficit in working capital for the next wheelgun match.

Lessons learned: The Wheelgun Championship proved to be a worthwhile way in which to encourage revolver shooting (at least in the SSR-dominated field; why so few ESR shooters?) and use our surplus cash. The $118 deficit roughly corresponds to the cost of the chronograph, which we didn't use because too many shooters were having trouble finding ammunition, let alone ammo that made power floor; on the other hand, we already have the chronograph for the next Wheelgun match.

The date of the next Wheelgun Championship depends on two things: having 18 above-average stages and enough working capital. We started with about $680 (and no chronograph) last time, so I'll gather up the stages when we have at least a $500 surplus. That will be no sooner than 6 monthly matches from now (even with the sale of the extra t-shirts), with the Championship in turn 11 months later: i.e, around November 2010.

In any case, it's nigh time for me to ride the high country and shoot in the USPSA Area 1 Championship, Idaho.

June 2, 2009: I pick up the Wheelgun trophies from Specialty Engraving ($616), start boxing them for shipment, and present Chet with his at the CGC membership meeting.

May 22, 2009: I order the Wheelgun trophies, which should be personalized and ready in early June, and update the financial spreadsheet. Total club funds: $2250.

May 19, 2009: I update Wayne's and Frank's classifications online, deposit $210 from the last batch of Wheelgun Championship entries at CB&T, and give a $108 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer at the board meeting.

May 16, 2009: scores Twenty-four revolver shooters compete in the first Wheelgun Championship, a number which compares nicely with the 27 at last year's Nationals and is several times better than the handful typically found at state matches. In fact, there is enough competition to bump up two SSR shooters in classification: great shooting, Wayne and Frank!

The squads of 6 chew up the 18 stages and spit out 176 rounds apiece in 6 hours on a day with a week's worth of weather crammed into it. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to Carl, Ron, and Capel for posting the results quickly and error-free; to Chet and his teardown crew for leaving the range even better than found; and to everyone for coming to the match!

May 15, 2009: Ron gives me an invoice for the scoresheets ($88), and I reimburse him for labels and paper ($29). He and Capel set up the scoring software and hardware. The squad of nine S.O.'s takes 8 hours to shoot the match. I pick up one more item for the S.O. prize table. Everything is ready.

May 14, 2009: The Wheelgun Championship match booklets and shooter packets run $50. My thanks to Chet, Myron, and Gary for setting up the stages with help from Steve B. I pick up the final entries and finish the squad lists.

May 9, 2009: I deposit $180 from Wheelgun Championship entries at CB&T, shoot Cherokee IPSC, purchase items for the S.O. prize table ($352), and pick up the T-shirts ($441).

May 5, 2009: For the Wheelgun Championship, I order spare targets and pasters, deposit $180 at CB&T, pick up more match entries in my mailbox, and hash out the scoring details with Ron L. at the CGC membership meeting.

May 1, 2009: Financial routine: deposit $180 from Wheelgun Championship entries at CB&T, pick up more match entries in my mailbox, leave a $94 check for range fees in the CGC treasurer's mailbox along with the updated spreadsheet, and place the T-shirt order. Total club funds: $2659 (before deposit).

Gunowners seem to be their own worst enemy these days, with their self-imposed "stupid tax" driving up the price of guns, ammo, and components; making the same scarce; and lengthening the waiting period for a carry permit -- similar to the goals of the gungrabbers.

April 21, 2009: I deposit the match proceeds of $347 at CB&T along with $180 from Wheelgun Championship entries, pick up more match entries in my mailbox, check over my rifle and ammo for the upcoming 600-yd sight-in, and attend the CGC board meeting.

April 5, 2009: scores Forty-seven shooters compete on a pleasant afternoon. The club collects $347 from the 36 IDPA members, 10 CGC members (18 total), and 1 new shooter. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Chet, Delbert, and Howard); to Ron L. for registering everyone; to Dave for publishing photos of the match; and to the shooters for leaving the range even better than found.

Lessons learned: The match introduced 1 new stage and reviewed 5 others. The first 2 stages didn't pair well timewise (too many strings in one bay).

Classified shooters: Your info is online, and I can sign your classification card at a future match.
