July 24, 2010: I check over the stage layouts for the Wheelgun Championship at CGC (getting there too late for the monthly bank run but catching the tail-end of the Cherokee Cowboys SASS match). There are 18 stages again: 3 long, 7 medium, 8 short, 177 rounds; the skill set and balance approximate the Classifier's. Then I start to collect the paperwork to mail the area coordinator.
July 9, 2010: With the mailorder of targets and pasters ($60), I include the 3 new IDPA memberships ($105). Also, I get the Wheelgun Championship logo ($30) updated for 2011.
Later this month, Ning will begin charging $20 per year for the iWheelgun site. I'll likely forego this because I think twitter has been a better way to communicate using social media in the past year. (For those who have joined iWheelgun, you can use your Ning ID to check out and join other Ning groups, too.)
July 4, 2010: scores Twenty-nine shooters compete on a relatively cool Independence Day. The club collects $210 from the 27 IDPA members (including 4 CGC members) and 2 new shooters; plus $105 for 3 new IDPA memberships. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Bud, Tom, and Kenneth); to Ron and Wanda for registering everyone and signing up new IDPA members; and to the shooters (especially Allan) for leaving the range even better than found.
Lessons learned: Get more targets and pasters. The match used 6 stages from last July and 2 long-range ones from the 2009 Wheelgun Championship. The Braselton fireworks were most enjoyable.
July 3, 2010: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $195 along with $70 for new IDPA memberships at CB&T; leave an $82 check for range fees with the updated spreadsheet in the CGC treasurer's mailbox; and shoot the Cherokee IHMSA match. Total club funds: $1648.
Quarterly summary: The club collected an additional $200 in improvement fees, then spent $155 on the frequent-shooter giveback and contributed $800 to the Cherokee USPSA steel-target order: a $755 difference. So the $1648 breaks down as $986 earmarked for range improvements (last quarter's $1741 less $755) and $652 in working capital for the 2011 Wheelgun Championship.
June 15, 2010: At the CGC board meeting, the club contributes $800 to the steel-target order placed by Cherokee USPSA's match director, Peter O. The board approves the Cherokee IDPA 2011 Wheelgun Championship for Saturday, May 21. The format will be similar to 2009's.
June 6, 2010: scores Forty-one shooters compete on an ideal D-Day afternoon. The club collects $195 from the 27 IDPA members (including 6 CGC members) and 14 new shooters; plus $70 for 2 new IDPA memberships. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Howard, Bud, and Chet, who couldn't stay for the match); to Ron for registering everyone and helping with the Classifier scores; to Wanda for signing up new IDPA and NRA members; and to the shooters (especially Lynn) for leaving the range even better than found.
Lessons learned: The match used 5 stages from April last year, plus 2 overflow stages; and introduced 1 new one.
Classified shooters: Your info is online, and I can sign your classification card at a future match.

May 26, 2010: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $244 and $70 for the new IDPA memberships at CB&T; and leave a $66 check for range fees in the CGC treasurer's mailbox along with the updated spreadsheet. Total club funds: $2335.
May 6, 2010: With the 2 now-completed new IDPA membership applications ($70), I include a mailorder of targets and pasters ($60; not really needed, but one less thing to do next month).
May 2, 2010: scores Thirty-three shooters compete in our first "Uncompetitive Barrel" match. The club collects $244 from the 18 "pocket guns" and 15 full-size. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Bud and Cantankerous Tom); to Wanda for registering everyone; and to Bud and Peter for staying late and helping leave the range even better than found.
Lessons learned: The match recycled seven stages which never quite worked for me but seemed promising somehow -- and indeed benefited from the BUG format: Stages limited to 5 rounds per string, all reloads off the clock, and no draws from holster.
April 23, 2010: Financial routine: renew 3 IDPA memberships and 1 new one for frequent shooters ($155); deposit the match proceeds of $172 at CB&T; and leave a $52 check for range fees in the CGC treasurer's mailbox along with the updated spreadsheet. Total club funds: $2217.
April 4, 2010: scores Twenty-six shooters compete on a pleasant Easter afternoon. The club collects $172 from the 23 IDPA members, 1 CGC member (11 total), and 2 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Chet, who's still nursing his shoulder; Bill Mu, John Ki, and Bud); to Wanda for registering everyone; and to Bud and Peter for staying late and helping leave the range even better than found.
Lessons learned: The match used Bill's two stages and six from the 2009 Wheelgun Championship.
March 31, 2010: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $374 along with $140 for new IDPA memberships at CB&T; and leave a $110 check for range fees with the updated spreadsheet in the CGC treasurer's mailbox. Total club funds: $2252 (plus $70 set aside with the 2 incomplete membership applications).
Quarterly summary: The club collected an additional $224 in improvement fees and spent $685 on the frequent-shooter giveback, a $461 difference. So the $2252 breaks down as $1741 earmarked for range improvements (last quarter's $2202 less $461) and $511 in working capital for the next wheelgun match. And there is enough working capital now to start organizing the 2011 Wheelgun Championship.
March 18, 2010: With the mailorder of targets and pasters ($59), I include 4 new IDPA memberships ($140; Carl and John D. still need to sign the waiver) collected at the match, plus some renewals for frequent shooters of the club's first 36 matches: 4 one-year ($160), with 8 more to be claimed. Thanks for coming out!
March 7, 2010: scores Fifty-five shooters compete on a mild spring afternoon. The club collects $374 from the 46 IDPA members, 4 CGC members (16 total), and 5 new shooters; plus $210 for 6 new IDPA memberships. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Howard, Kenneth, Bud, Peter, and Bill, who also designed Stage 1); to Ron for registering everyone, signing up new members, and helping with the Classifier scores; to Dave for publishing photos of the match; and to the shooters (especially David) for leaving the range even better than found.
Lessons learned: Get more targets and pasters. The match used Bill's stage, six from the 2009 Wheelgun Championship, and tried out an historical reenactment. Registration and squadding went smoothly, and the match reflected this; registration will begin at noon to shorten the line. Judging by the classification crossovers, it seems that more than a few need to shoot the Classifier -- and put a little effort into it.
Classified shooters: Your info is online, and I can sign your classification card at a future match.
February 16, 2010: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $259 at CB&T; give a $74 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet; and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $2207.
February 11, 2010: With the mailorder of targets and pasters ($59), I include IDPA membership renewals for frequent shooters of the club's first 36 matches: 2 three-year, 7 one-year, and 1 new ($525) -- with 12 more to be claimed. Thanks for coming out!
February 7, 2010: scores Thirty-seven shooters compete on a cold but sunny afternoon. The club collects $259 from the 26 IDPA members, 3 CGC members (10 total), and 7 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to the setup crew (Howard, Kenneth, and Bill, who also designed Stages 1 & 2); to Ron for registering everyone; and to the shooters for leaving the range even better than found.
Lessons learned: Get more targets and pasters. The match used Bill's 2 stages and 6 from last February.

January 19, 2010: Financial routine: deposit the match proceeds of $135 at CB&T; give a $40 check for range fees to the CGC treasurer along with the updated spreadsheet; and attend the CGC board meeting. Total club funds: $2606.
January 3, 2010: scores Twenty shooters compete on a cold, windswept afternoon. The club collects $135 from the 13 IDPA members, 2 CGC members (6 total), and 5 new shooters. My thanks to all the Safety Officers (without you not); to Ron L. for registering everyone; and to the shooters for helping with setup & teardown and leaving the range even better than found.
Lessons learned: Get extra batteries. The match used 2 stages from the 2009 Wheelgun Championship and 6 from December 2008 -- for consideration in the 2011 Championship. The iWheelgun site now has a forum for discussions.
Annual reminders:
- no shooting before the match, please;
- be sure to include your IDPA and/or CGC numbers on your scoresheet (and fill out the legalese on the back);
- make checks payable to "Cherokee Gun Club -- IDPA";
- please paste as many holes as you shoot and pick up as much brass, too;
- "understand that this is a volunteer sport and volunteers do the work necessary for you to shoot matches and become classified; the more you offer to assist, the better the system works; be an active shooter by contributing your time and talents"; CGC members are Hosts, non-members are Guests, both are volunteers;
- non-members may shoot after the match -- only if accompanied by a CGC member; (see me if you can't find one)
- please remember that one of the responsibilities of IDPA membership is to shoot the Classifier at least once every 12 months;
- there are usually enough shooters to sort the match results by classification; if we ever have enough shooters to sort the results by division as well, then we have more shooters than our match format can handle; so, if you enjoy these matches, don't tell anyone about them.
